Establishment of “Maria’s Home-Education and Culture Campus”

On Saturday May 4th 2013, His Eminence Metropolitan Bishop of Chios, Psara and Oinousses, Mr. Markos officially announced the establishment of “Maria’s Home-Education and Culture Campus”, a boarding facility in Kardamyla  for Gymnasium and Lyceum students, donated by the family of Captain P. Tsakos. The announcement was made at the Livanion High School in the presence of the donor and Founder of the “Maria Tsakos”Foundation.Captain Panagiotis N. Tsakos, local authorities of Kardamyla, Professor Stamatis Krimizis, of ship-owners, seafarers, members of the educational community, graduates and friends with their families.

Captain Panagiotis Tsakos in his remarks stressed his concern for maintaining school operation in Kardamyla and offering opportunities for the young people to excel. He considers this as a duty and obligation, “Without this School greek shipping would not be what it is today. Instead of ships more likely, there would be an equal number of sheep grazing the land of Chios!”

The facility has the capacity of accommodating up to 25 students. It consists of a modern boarding house with all the necessary comforts and amenities, including a computer lab, playing grounds and a garden with homegrown fruits and vegetables.

THE LIBERTY CONGRESS: “Enhancing Cooperation and sharing Responsibility”

The Congress was held onboard the ss “HELLAS LIBERTY” in Piraeus on Thursday June 20th. The Chairman of the “Maria Tsakos” Foundation gave the keynote address. Captain P. Tsakos gave remarks




Maritime Labor Convention (MLC) International Seminar; Athens May 30-31, 2013

In light of the Maritime’s Labor Convention official entrance into force on August 20th, the Maria Tsakos Foundation organized an international seminar in Athens on May 30-31, 2013 under the auspices of the Greek Ministry of Shipping and the Aegean.  The primary objective was to explain MLC’s requirements and implications and provide advise on ways and means for its wide and effective implementation as it covers a wide range of matters of interest to seafarers, flag and port states and labor supply nations.

The Seminar was open to representatives of Governments, shipping companies, manning agencies, seafarer organizations, international shipping organizations, maritime universities, academics, students and any interested individual.

The seminar took place at the Eugenidion Foundation Conference Center.  Speakers included among others, dignitaries and representatives from international organizations, the IMO, ILO, the EU, shipping and seafarers’ organizations, the Greek Ministry of Shipping

PUBLIC LECTURE: “The beginning of space exploration and Voyager’s journey to the frontiers of our Galaxy”

Professor S. Krimizis, President of the Scientific Council and a space exploration pioneer and expert gave a public lecture in Chios on April 12, 2013 on the occasion of the International Day of Human Space Flight.  The Maria Tsakos Foundation and the Chios Astronomy Club jointly organized this event; the venue was the Amphitheater of the Sciences Management School of the Aegean University.  A standing-room only audience was captivated by a fascinating presentation including the first ever sounds from space and archived videos of space exploration.


The second meeting of the MTS Scientific Council was held at the Foundation’s Athens premises on April 2-3, 2013.  The Founder, Captain P. Tsakos and the Foundation’s President Mr. E. Mitropoulos were also in attendance.

The Scientific Council deliberations were focused on the development of a 5-year strategic plan. A road map for activities, programs, research projects in sync with the Foundations’ Vision and Mission.

The next meeting of the Scientific Council is scheduled for the fall of 2013.

Our response to the fires – Working together for a better Chios

The International Congress under the theme “Our response to the fires – Working together for a better Chios”, organized by the “Maria Tsakos” Foundation – International Center of Maritime Research and Tradition N.G.O., under the auspices of the Ministry of Mercantile Marine and the Aegean, held at the Homerion Cultural Center of Chios concluded its works successfully on 16th October.
