Maritime Tradition

Το Σάββατο 20 Ιουνίου 2015, οι μαθητές μας του “Σπιτιού της Μαρίας” πραγματοποιήσαμε εκπαιδευτική επίσκεψη στις Οινούσσες με το ιστιοφόρο μας το “ΜΑΝΙΑ”.

Ξεκινήσαμε στις 10 το πρωΐ από το λιμάνι της Χίου και με υπέροχο καιρό φτάσαμε γρήγορα στην Αιγνούσα. Η πρώτη επίσκεψη στο Ναυτικό Μουσείο. Ξεναγηθήκαμε από τον υπεύθυνο Καπετάν Κώστα στις διάφορες αίθουσες. Εντυπωσιακά όλα τα εκθέματα: Οι μινιατούρες πλοίων του 14ου-19ου αιώνα κατασκευασμένες από πολλών ειδών υλικά, οι ζωγραφικοί πίνακες του Αριστείδη Γλύκα. Ο Φάρος του 19ου αιώνα από το νησάκι της Παναγίας, τα εργαλεία του ναυτικού, οι βιτρίνες με τα σύγχρονα πλοία και πολλά άλλα.

On Tuesday 2nd June 2015, at 19.30-21:00 hrs, the “Maria Tsakos” Foundation hosted at its premises in Chios, the on-screen documentary show entitled “Venice, lady of the sea routes of the Mediterranean, 6th-16th century”, from the series “The Sea Routes of the Mediterranean from 10th to 20th century”.

The documentary was shown within the framework of the University of the Aegean course “Maritime History”.

Presentation was made by the director of the documentary, Mr. John Theocharopoulos, creator of several documentaries on rural communities and Mediterranean cultures.

Την Τρίτη 2 Ιουνίου 2015 στις 19.30-21:00, το Ίδρυμα “Μαρία Τσάκος” φιλοξένησε στις εγκαταστάσεις του στη Χίο, προβολή του ντοκιμαντέρ “Η Βενετία, αρχόντισσα των θαλασσινών δρόμων της Μεσογείου 6ος-16ος αιώνας”, από τη σειρά: “Θαλάσσιοι δρόμοι της Μεσογείου από τον 10ο μέχρι τον 20ο αιώνα”.

Η προβολή πραγματοποιήθηκε στα πλαίσια του μαθήματος “Ναυτιλιακή Ιστορία” από το Τμήμα Ναυτιλίας και Επιχειρηματικών Υπηρεσιών του Πανεπιστημίου Αιγαίου.

Παρουσίαση έκανε ο σκηνοθέτης της ταινίας, Γιάννης Θεοχαρόπουλος, δημιουργός αρκετών ντοκιμαντέρ, με θέμα τις αγροτικές κοινωνίες και τους πολιτισμούς της Μεσογείου.

Στο Αμφιθέατρο του “Μεγάρου Μακεδονία”, πραγματοποιήθηκε την Τρίτη, 26 Μαΐου 2015, στις 19:00, η παρουσίαση των βιβλίων της Ιατρού Ειρήνης Σαρόγλου-Τσάκου, “Μινωική Θαλασσοκρατία” & “Αι Πολύχρυσαι Μυκήναι”. Η Ιατρός Δρ. Ειρήνη Σαρόγλου-Τσάκου εγκαινίασε την Τετραλογία του Αιγαίου, με αυτά τα δύο πολύτιμα έργα, στα οποία συμπυκνώνεται η πλουσιότατη εμπειρία της αλλά και η πρωτότυπη μελέτη της για θέματα της ελληνικής ναυτιλίας και του ελληνικού πολιτισμού.

Το έργο “Μινωική Θαλασσοκρατία”, ταξιδεύει τους αναγνώστες αντίστροφα στο χρόνο, προς την προιστορία της ελληνικής ναυτιλίας, επιχειρώντας να απαντήσει στο ερώτημα: “Πώς οι ναυτικοί μιας τόσο μικρής χώρας κατέχουν αξιοζήλευτη θέση!” Το εξαιρετικό αυτό πόνημα, ξετυλίγει το κουβάρι του χρόνου και με αριστουργηματικό τρόπο περνάμε από το θαύμα των λίμπερτις, στα ιστιοφόρα του 19ου αιώνα και της Ελληνικής Επανάστασης του 1821. Έπειτα, συνεχίζεται η πορεία από τους βυζαντινούς δρόμωνες στα πλοία του Μεγάλου Αλεξάνδρου, που ταξίδεψαν στον Ινδικό ωκεανό και στη φημισμένη αθηναϊκή τριήρη, που έγραψε σελίδες δόξας στη ναυμαχία της Σαλαμίνας.

Δεύτερο σταθμό της ναυτικής “Τετραλογίας”, αποτελεί το έργο “Αι Πολύχρυσαι Μυκήναι”. Μέσα από τη γοητευτική περιπλάνηση στις σελίδες αυτού του έργου, δικαιωματικά, μπορούμε να ισχυριστούμε πως η θάλασσα υπήρξε και για τον μυκηναϊκό, όπως άλλωστε και για όλους τους πολιτισμούς του Αιγαίου, η πύλη που διηύρηνε τους ορίζοντές του, που ανέπτυξε τις επαφές του και του προσέδωσε το χαρακτήρα του οικουμενικού πολιτισμού.

Στην παρουσίαση, εκλεκτοί Ομιλητές υπογράμμισαν τη σπουδαιότητα των παραπάνω έργων και την πρωτοτυπία των θεμάτων, καθώς εμπλουτίζουν τη σύγχρονη ναυτική και πολιτιστική βιβλιογραφία με νέα πολύτιμα στοιχεία και εστιάζουν σε μία παραμελημένη διάσταση της ναυτικής ιστορίας. Ανάμεσα στους Ομιλήτες, ήταν η κα Νάγια Πολυχρονάκου-Σγουρίτσα, Καθηγήτρια Προϊστορικής Αρχαιολογίας του Πανεπιστημίου Αθηνών, ο κ. Πάνος Βαλαβάνης, Καθηγητής Κλασσικής Αρχαιολογίας του Πανεπιστημίου Αθηνών, η κα Ελένη Κώτσου Διευθύντρια Εκδόσεων του Ταμείου Αρχαιολογικών Πόρων και Απαλλοτριώσεων του Υπουργείου Πολιτισμού και ο κ. Λεωνίδας Δημητριάδης-Ευγενίδης, Πρόεδρος του Ιδρύματος Ευγενίδου. Τα βιβλία παρουσίασε η κα Αναστασία Κατσικογιάννη-Μπάστα.

-Speech entitled “The Wife of the Seafarer” by Capt. Kostas Frangos, accompanied with musical melodies by seafarer Antonis Moraitakis and recitation of maritime poems of N. Kavadias (24/06/2015)

-Lecture by Prof. Gelina Charlaftis entitled “Greek Shipping in the north-east Aegean before the Greek Revolution” (25/06/2015)

-Torch boat racing in the port of Kardamyla (27/06/2015)

On Tuesday, 17th February 2015, a festive event for the Tsakos Shipping Seafarers and Chian Veterans took place in the “Maria Tsakos” Foundation premises in Chios. A total of 48 people attended, including Captains and Chief Engineers.

The “Maria Tsakos” Foundation in cooperation with Tsakos Shipping Chios organized the event. Our Seafarers were welcomed by Mrs. Toula Karamani and the Foundation’s Secretariat, Ms. Maria Psora, Ms. Peggy Balekas and Ms. Markella Tsimouni.

It was also a pleasure to welcome Capt. George N. Sazaklis, Crew Advisor, and Ms. Maria Nikoloudaki, Crew Administrative Assistant of the Tsakos Columbia Shipmanagement offices in Athens.

Mr. Kostas Karamanis (Tsakos Shipping Chios), Mr. Pavlos Kalogerakis (“Maria Tsakos” Foundation, Director) and Capt. George Sazaklis (TCM Offices in Athens) welcomed the attendees. A tribute was given to the value of seamanship, cooperation and the Tsakos Family love to all members of the Company.

During the event, a Skype connection with Capt. Tsakos and Dr. Tsakos was realized, whilst in London. Capt. Tsakos greeted each of the attendees and wished personal and family happiness. At the same time, photographic material from the Foundations of Uruguay and Ghana, ”Maria’s Home”, the Shipping Dept., as well as the Tsakos Group Pie Cutting Event was shown on a projector screen.

The event ended by offering wine and wishing health and progress.

Την Τρίτη 17 Φεβρουαρίου 2015 πραγματοποιήθηκε στο μέγαρο του Ιδρύματος “Μαρία Τσάκος-Διεθνές Κέντρο Ναυτικής Έρευνας και Παράδοσης” στη Χίο, εορταστική συνάντηση ναυτικών και στελεχών της εταιρείας αλλά και Χίων απόμαχων της θάλασσας. Παρευρέθηκαν 48 συνολικά άτομα, Πλοίαρχοι ή Μηχανικοί.

Η εκδήλωση πραγματοποιήθηκε σε συνεργασία του Ιδρύματος και του Ναυτιλιακού Τμήματος της Χίου. Επί της υποδοχής των Ναυτικών μας ήταν η κα. Τούλα Καραμανή και η Γραμματεία του Ιδρύματος, κα. Μαρία Ψώρα, κα. Πέγκυ Μπαλέκα και κα. Μαρκέλλα Τσιμούνη.

Ιδιαίτερη τιμή για την εκδήλωση απετέλεσε η παρουσία του Καπτ. Γιώργη Σαζακλή, Crew Advisor της Tsakos Columbia Shipmanagement, και της κας. Μαρίας Νικολουδάκη, Crew Administrative Assistant της Tsakos Columbia Shipmanagement, από τα κεντρικά γραφεία της Αθήνας.

Τους παρευρισκόμενους χαιρέτισαν κατά σειρά ο κ. Κώστας Καραμανής εκ μέρους του Ναυτιλιακού Τμήματος, ο κ. Παύλος Καλογεράκης εκ μέρους του Ιδρύματος και ο Καπτ. Γεώργιος Σαζακλής εκ μέρους των κεντρικών γραφείων. Όλοι σημείωσαν την ιδιαίτερη αξία της ναυτοσύνης, τηςσυνεργασίας όλων των παραγόντων της αλλά και της αγάπης της οικογένειας Τσάκου για όλα τα μέλη της ευρύτερης ναυτικής οικογένειας της Εταιρείας.

Ιδιαίτερη χαρά για όλους κατά την εκδήλωση, απετέλεσε η σύνδεση μέσω Skype με τον Καπτ. Παναγιώτη Ν. Τσάκο και τη σύζυγό του Ειρήνη οι οποίοι βρισκόταν στο Λονδίνο.

Ο Καπετάνιος χαιρέτησε έναν προς έναν τους παρευρισκόμενους και ευχήθηκε ό,τι καλό προσωπικό και οικογενειακό. Σε όλη τη διάρκεια της εκδήλωσης γινόταν προβολή φωτογραφικού υλικού από τα Ιδρύματα Ουρουγουάης και Γκάνας, από το “Σπίτι της Μαρίας”, από το Ναυτιλιακό Τμήμα και την εορταστική εκδήλωση της ευλογίας βασιλόπιτας στην Αθήνα.

 Η εκδήλωση έκλεισε με ένα ποτήρι κρασί και ευχές για υγεία και προκοπή.

On Saturday 10^th January 2015, the “Maria Tsakos” Foundation hosted at its premises, the annual New Year’s pie-cutting event for the Maritime Associations of Chios, the Chios Cultural Association of Mercantile Marine Officers (PESAEN) and the Chian Union of the Navy Retirement Fund Pensioners. A New Year’s pie was also cut on behalf of “Tsakos Shipping” and the Foundation.

The traditional pie cutting ceremony was followed by a public recognition of Chian seafarers, distinguished in naval literature and arts.

More specifically, the seafarers acknowledged for their work in naval literature were:

Capt. Konstantinos M. Frangos, Capt. Georgios M. Frangos, Capt. Dimitrios D. Melachrinoudis, Capt. Michalis G. Kariamis, the President of the Alumni of the “Livanos Secondary School” of Kardamyla, Capt. Alekos Emm. Karamouzos and C.E. (rtd.) Dimitrios G. Andrianas.

The following seafarers were recognized for their contribution in arts:

Capt. Ioannis St. Frangakis, Capt. Christos G. Vardakis, Capt. Nikolaos Styl. Garris, Capt. Michalis Stef. Poupalos, Capt. Stamatis Sot. Karagiannis, C.E. (rtd.) Ioannis K. Verginas, C.E. (rtd.) Antonios K. Moraitakis, C.E. (rtd.) Evangelos Elef. Kalogrias and Radio Operator (rtd.) Stylianos St. Mastropetros.

Solicitor Mr. Nikolaos Sot. Chalkias received an honourary award for his long-term services in Shipping.

The ceremony was blessed by Father D. Giomelos, Vicar-General and Representative of His Eminence the Metropolitan Bishop of Chios, Psara and Oinousses. Many attendees honoured the event with their presence, among whom were the Parliamentarians of Chios, Mrs. Maria Stavrinoudi-Sodi and Mr. Konstantinos Triantafyllos, the Vice-Regional Manager of N. Aegean, Mr. Stamatis Karmatzis, the Mayor of Chios, Mr. Emmanouil Vournous, the Mayor of Oinousses, Mr. Stamatis Vogiatzis, the Director of the Merchant Marine Academy of Chios, Mr. Georgios Skandalis, the Director of the Merchant Marine Academy of Oinousses, Mr. Ioannis Margaris and Associate Professor Eleni Thanopoulou from the Department of Shipping Trade and Transport of the University of the Aegean.

In their speeches, the Foundation’s General Manager, Adm. Stavros Michaelidis and the “Tsakos Shipping” representative, Mr. Kostas Karamanis, thanked all the attendees for their presence and wished for safe journeys to all seafarers. Capt. Kostas Frangos gave a speech on the role of the “Liberty” vessels, while Prof. Eleni Thanopoulou focused on the significance of Greek shipping and the difficulties seafarers face daily.

The event ended with a session of Christmas carols by the choir of the “LEON ALLATIOS” Cultural Association of Chios.

The “Maria Tsakos” Foundation hosted in its Chios premises, a pre-festival promotion of documentaries of historical and social interest. This annual Festival is funded by the Prefecture of North Aegean and co-organized by the University of the Aegean.

As the name indicates, each year, the Festival is being held on an island on the North Aegean, where awarded documentary directors are hosted. The Artistic Director of the related events is Mr. Kostas Spyropoulos.

This year, the Festival was launched with a documentary on “PATRIS, the wreckage”, dedicated to greek seamanship. This documentary on the most unique steamboat wreckage discovered in the Mediterranean Sea, was filmed in cooperation with the Museum of Industrial History of Syros Island.

The “Maria Tsakos” Foundation organized a programme on “Promotion of Maritime Tradition and the Trading Routes in the Northern Aegean”. This initiative included printing of maps of Chios island (in Greek and English), characterized by the information on the traditional shipping areas of the island, and free guided tours visiting the Foundation’s premises, the Nautical Museum of Chios, and the traditional maritime places of Vrontados, Lagkada, Oinousses and Kardamyla.

This activity falls under the Foundation-initiated and EU-funded programme “Sea of Culture”, implemented by the Prefecture of North Aegean.

On Saturday 21th and Sunday 22th June 2014, the Chios Amateur Radio Club organized a special 2-day event at the “Maria Tsakos” Foundation premises. A ham shortwave radio station was installed sending out signals to all over the world on the frequency SZ8XIO. Also presenting the well-preserved ship radio station of the Foundation, they set up an exhibition with naval and military communication material so that the audience learns more about the past ways of communication.
