The Foundation celebrated this year’s Maritime Week with the following events:

-Art Exhibition by Mpampis Koiliaris themed “Shipping” (22-29/06/2015)

-Hosting the European Conference ECONSHIP2015 (24-26/06/2015)

-Speech entitled “The Wife of the Seafarer” by Capt. Kostas Frangos, accompanied with musical melodies by seafarer Antonis Moraitakis and recitation of maritime poems of N. Kavadias (24/06/2015)

-Lecture by Prof. Gelina Charlaftis entitled “Greek Shipping in the north-east Aegean before the Greek Revolution” (25/06/2015)

“BENEFIT” Meeting – University of the Aegean (2-4 February 2015)

From Monday, 2nd February 2015 to Wednesday, 4th February 2015, the “Maria Tsakos” Foundation hosted at its premises in Chios, the 1st Consortium Meeting of the Project ”BENEFIT-Business Models for Enhancing Funding and Enabling Financing for Infrastructure in Transport”. The meeting took place within the framework of the European Programme “HORIZON 2020″. The Department of Shipping, Trade and Transport of the University of the Aegean has been undertaking this Project.

“Shipping in the 21st Century” Forum – October 8th 2014

The “Maria Tsakos” Foundation organized a Forum on “Shipping in the 21st Century” in Athens on 8 October 2014, in association with Capital Link.

The aim of the one day-Forum was to provide an opportunity to shipping experts from around the world, to examine and analyze the current and future state of the industry amidst the fast political,economic and technological developments we experience on a daily basis.

The Forum was geared to deal with in two main sessions: one am and the other pm.The morning session dealt with economic, financial, geopolitical and related matters with an impact on the structure of shipping and shipping markets while the afternoon session dealt with technological developments impacting the design and equipment of ships and matters relating to the marine/atmospheric environment and security (piracy and terrorist attacks) at sea.

The morning session was chaired by the renowned French economist and until recently Executive Director of the World Trade Organization (WTO) Mr. Pascal Lamy and the afternoon session by the Chairman of the “Maria Tsakos” Foundation and Emeritus Secretary-General of the IMO, Mr. Efthymios E. Mitropoulos.

Our ambition was to secure the participation, as moderators and panellists, of prominent individuals from the international maritime community to enable the Forum to achieve its objectives and, in final analysis, to contribute to a better understanding of the various forces that shape our industry today and may influence its state in the years to come.

COUNCILS’ WORKS – September 2014

On 12-14 September 2014, the Board of Directors and the Scientific Council of the Foundation convened in Chios. During the works of both administrative bodies, we had the pleasure to host the European Commissioner of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Mrs. Maria Damanaki.

The Commissioner congratulated the Foundation for its innovative work and especially for the programme “Sea of Skills” funded by the European Union (a 7-country Project where the Foundation has the leading role).

Shipping Conference “Chios-Shipping-History-Today’s Challenges” – May 4th 2014

PRESS RELEASE

It is with great success that the works of the Shipping Conference “Chios-Shipping-History-Today’s Challenges”, organized by the “Maria Tsakos” Foundation in cooperation with the Prefecture of the North Aegean, the University of the Aegean and the Association of Friends of Oinousses, concluded on Sunday 4th May 2014. This two-day event was hosted in the “Maria Tsakos” Foundation premises in Chios on 3rd May, and on 4th May in Oinousses.

The Shipping Conference took place within the framework of the programme “Sea of Culture”; the relative action was the “Promotion of Maritime Tradition and the Trading Routes in the Northern Aegean”.

The scope of the Conference, was twofold: 1) to examine the historical dimension the maritime profession had in the economic and social evolution of Chios island and 2) to highlight the profession’s prospects in the current labour market and as importantly to give the opportunity to seafarers and students of the University of the Aegean and the Merchant Marine Academies of Chios and Oinousses to be informed and updated on the ongoing developments and current trends in shipping, in general.

The Conference was attended by the local authorities, ship-owners, representatives of shipping associations, seafarers and local community, in addition to over 200 students of the University and the Marine Academies. The interest of the audience was kept undiminished during all sessions as an array of prominent speakers gave lively and
useful presentations.

Conference deliberations were divided into four sessions covering the following themes: National Shipping Policy, Shipping and the European Union, International Maritime Institutional Framework and, Evolutions in International Shipping. Speakers included among others: Mr. George Gratsos, Chairman of the Hellenic Chamber of Shipping, Mr. Leonidas Dimitriadis-Evgenides, President of the “Evgenides Foundation”, Mr. George Theotokas, Chairman of the Navy Retirement Fund, Associate Professor Eleni Thanopoulou from the University of the Aegean, Assistant Professor  Anna Kotrikla from the University of the Aegean, Ltd. Vanessa Antonakou (HCG) representing the Directorate of Maritime Labour at the Ministry of Mercantile Marine and the Aegean, Prof. Stratos Papadimitriou, Chairman of the Shipping Department at the University of Piraeus, Associate Professor Ioannis Theotokas from the University of the Aegean, Mr. George Xyradakis, Managing Director of XRTC, Mr. Vassilis Papageorgiou, naval architect and Vice-Chairman of the Tsakos Group, Vice-Admiral (HCG) Nikolaos Themelaros, Rear Admiral (rtd.)Antonis Papaioannou from the Diaplous Maritime Services, Capt. Alexandros Lagouros, Director at the Directorate of Marine Environment Protection at the Ministry of Mercantile Marine and the Aegean, Capt. Ioannis Kourouniotis, Director at the Directorate for Safety Navigation at the Ministry of Mercantile Marine and the Aegean, Mr. Nikolaos Daniil, Director of the Merchant Marine Academy of Chios, Mr. Ioannis Mennis, Student at the Marine Engineering School of Chios, Mr. Nikolaos Tsolas, Student at the Merchant Marine Academy of Oinousses, and the General Manager of the “Maria Tsakos” Foundation R. Admiral (rtd.) HCG, Mr. Stavros Michailides.

Conference participants and speakers had the opportunity to sightseeing Chios and Oinousses and view a photograph exhibition with archival material collected by the “Maria Tsakos” Foundation pertaining to the history of the Marine Academies of both islands.

The relative action “Promotion of Maritime Tradition and the Trading Routes in the Northern Aegean” is under the co-sponsorship of Greece and the European Union.

“DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVES OF THE E.U.” – October 19th 2013

On Saturday, October 19th, 2013 the Foundation hosted a seminar entitled: “Development Initiatives of the European Union – Regional Development and Employment- The possibilities for the Northern Aegean”. The seminar was organized by the European Parliament Office in Greece, the European Commission Representatives in Greece and the “Maria Tsakos” Foundation.

Among the speakers, were the former Minister of Mercantile Marine and Member of the Parliament Mr. Costis Mousouroulis, the Head of the European Parliament Office in Greece, Mr. Leonidas Antonakopoulos, the Deputy Head of the European Commission Representation in Greece, Mr. Argyris Peroulakis, the General Manager of the “Maria Tsakos” Foundation, Adm. Stavros Michailidis as well as Mr. George Plakotaris from General Secretariat of the Aegean.

The seminar was attended by representatives of the local authorities, various Chambers of Chios and numerous citizens.

5TH EUROPEAN COAST GUARD FUNCTIONS FORUM – September 12nd-14th, 2013

The 5th Plenary Conference of the Forum of the Heads of the Coast Guard Functions of the E.U. and Associated Schengen Countries (European Coast Guard Functions Forum-ECGFF) was held after an invitation from the “Maria Tsakos” Fountation, in Chios during 12-14 September 2013.

The Minister of Mercantile Marine and the Aegean, Mr. Miltiades Varvitsiotis, Captain Panagiotis N. Tsakos and our Chairman Mr. Efthimios Mitropoulos also attended the meeting.

Delegates included prominent personalities of the maritime sector, including, among others, the Minister of Transport of France Mr. Frédéric Cuvillier, the former Minister of Mercantile Marine and the Aegean Mr. Kostis Mousouroulis, the Mayor of Chios Mr. Polidoros Lamprinoudis, the Secretary General of Maritime Matters of France, Mr. Michel AYMERIC, European Parliament representatives and Senior Officials of the European Commission and the competent the Bodies of the European Union.

The “Maria Tsakos” Foundation hosted the welcome dinner and the farewell reception at the last evening of the  Forum.

THE LIBERTY CONGRESS: “Enhancing Cooperation and sharing Responsibility”

The Congress was held onboard the ss “HELLAS LIBERTY” in Piraeus on Thursday June 20th. The Chairman of the “Maria Tsakos” Foundation gave the keynote address. Captain P. Tsakos gave remarks

Conference “Correctional policy and detention from the past to present days” – June 10th 2013

On June 10, 2013 a conference entitled “Correctional policy and detention from the past to present days” was hosted in the courtyard of the Foundation.

The Conference was organized by the Law Society of Chios. Its objective was the initiation of a dialogue among pertinent bodies on the effectiveness of current correctional policies.

Maritime Labor Convention (MLC) International Seminar; Athens May 30-31, 2013

In light of the Maritime’s Labor Convention official entrance into force on August 20th, the Maria Tsakos Foundation organized an international seminar in Athens on May 30-31, 2013 under the auspices of the Greek Ministry of Shipping and the Aegean.  The primary objective was to explain MLC’s requirements and implications and provide advise on ways and means for its wide and effective implementation as it covers a wide range of matters of interest to seafarers, flag and port states and labor supply nations.

The Seminar was open to representatives of Governments, shipping companies, manning agencies, seafarer organizations, international shipping organizations, maritime universities, academics, students and any interested individual.

The seminar took place at the Eugenidion Foundation Conference Center.  Speakers included among others, dignitaries and representatives from international organizations, the IMO, ILO, the EU, shipping and seafarers’ organizations, the Greek Ministry of Shipping
