13th Business Week Conference – May 9th 2013

On May 9, 2013 the “Maria Tsakos” Foundation sponsored the inaugural event of the 13th Annual Business Week Conference, organized by the Association of Students and Graduates of Piraeus University’s Master in Business Administration program.

Seminar “Marine Environment, Maritime Museums and Education” – 20-21 April 2013

On April 20-21, 2013 the “Maria Tsakos” Foundation hosted a two-day seminar in its Auditorium entitled “Marine Environment, Maritime Museums and Education”. The Seminar was organized by the Directorate of Primary Education of Chios. Its aim was to provoke the students’ interest on matters concerning marine environment and maritime tradition and the role of maritime museums.

S. Krimizis’ lecture on “The beginning of the space age and the exit towards the Galaxy with Voyager”

On April 14, 2013 the distinguished Academic and Chairman of the Scientific Council of the Foundation, Dr. Stamatis Krimizis delivered a lecture on “The beginning of the space age and the exit towards the Galaxy with Voyager”.

The lecture was held at the Auditorium of the University of the Aegean under the auspices of the “Maria Tsakos” Foundation. This event was organized on the occasion of the “International Day of Human Flight in Space” and provoked the interest of its audience, in a standing room-only Auditorium.

Seminar “The psychology of diet” – March 14th 2013

On March 14, 2013, an informative seminar was hosted in the conference room of the “Maria Tsakos” Foundation. The seminar entitled “The psychology of diet”, was organized by the scientific team of nutrition and psychology.

The seminar, which focused on the significance of diet on human health and described important elements of a healthy diet, was given by  Counseling Psychologist, Dr. Em. Koukoulis and the Dietitian – Nutrionist, Dr. St. Karlos.

International Seminar “Our response to the fires – Working together for a better Chios” 15- 16 October 2012

Response to the fires

On 15-16 October 2012, the International Congress entitled “Our response to the fires – Working together for a better Chios” was held at the Homerion Cultural Center of Chios under the auspices of the Ministry of Mercantile Marine and the Aegean. This well attended initiative, organized and sponsored by the Foundation just a few months after the devastating summer fires that hit the island, brought together international and national experts in an effort to come up with practical ways for alleviating the environmental disaster and preventing future ones.

The objectives of the Congress were:

   -  The analysis and the drafting of recommendations for the recovery of the island and the healing of its wounds and;

   -  The contribution to the creation of strong infrastructures for the prevention and diminution of similar calamities in the future, as well as for the rehabilitation and further economic development and growth of the island.

Concluding its deliberations, the Congress adopted unanimously three Resolutions that pertained to recommended ways for recovery and development, such as measures of prevention in case of extensive fires, 2) the significance of volunteerism  to provide direct aid, 3) the declaration of the trees “Prina” and “Shina” as monuments of natural interest.

The “ELEFTHERIA” exhibition was inaugurated with the presence of Cpt. Panagiotis Tsakos, the Eminent Bishop of Chios, Psara and Oinousses, Mr. Markos who blessed the exhibition, the Minister of Mercantile Marine and the Aegean, Mr. Kostis Moussouroulis, Mr. and Mrs. Paloubis, Mr. Mitropoulos as well as all the local authorities of Chios and friends and Colleagues of the Foundation. The Exhibition was accessible to the public until 16th December 2012 and hosted exhibits from the Nautical Museum of Greece, the Horemis family and the P.C.V. (Progressive Club of Vrontados).

Apart from individual visitors, the exhibition had been visited on a daily basis by schools of all levels of education. In total 840 students from 30 different schools  visited the exhibition.

Greek & European Merchant Marine Day

The “Maria Tsakos” Foundation was a sponsor of the official celebration of the Greek Merchant Marine Day and European Maritime Day, the proceeds of which will be disbursed towards the upgrade of maritime education.

The celebration of Greek Merchant Marine Day was established in 2008 by the Hellenic Chamber of Shipping (N.E.E.) and the Pan-Hellenic Seamen’s Federation (P.N.O.) in honour of our great merchant marine, its sailors, and the entrepreneurs of the seas. Subsequent to the establishment of this institution, the European Union established the celebration of European Maritime Day.

Contribution of the Chians in the development of Piraeus

On August 1st, 2012 the contract of the study/research on the “Contribution of the Chians in the development of Piraeus” was signed.

This research aims to indicate the contribution of the Chians in the development of the modern Greek Piraeus and to monitor the various actions of the Chian people in the city in a extended period and it is being conducted by the historian Mr. Michalis Varlas, researcher of the Foundation of the Hellenic World.

The bibliography on the Chians in Piraeus is being composed including:

•General books and articles about Piraeus.
•General books and articles with reference to the Chians and Piraeus.
•Particular books and articles about the Chians of Piraeus as well as the Chians generally.
•Published lists of sources concerning Piraeus and the Chians.
•Law texts, administration documents and digitized findings which refer to the subject.

The fund raising event was co-organized with the Chios Marine Club and took place at the Foundation’s atrium.

Some of the most important personalities of the Greek Shipping World participated to this event.

The amount of funds collected was donated to the Holy Metropolis’ disposal for the mess support of the island’s paupers.

Art exhibition

The seafarers’ art exhibition was inaugurated with the presence of Cpt. Panagiotis Tsakos and Mrs. Marina Plaka. The exhibition comprised of paintings, miniatures of historic ships and other works manufactured by Seafarers. The event was crowned with success. It ended on 2nd September 2012 and the total number of visitors exceeded the number of 500 people.
